Faysal Bank T20 Cup – Day 2 Round Up: Stallions and Zebras gallop, Abbottabad lose the plot

Second day produced two one-sided affairs and a close run. Hyderabad Hawks were thrashed by Sialkot Stallions rather embarrassingly, while Karachi Zebras overcame Quetta Bears without much fuss. Lahore Eagles, though, had to sweat for their victory over Abbottabad Falcons.

Group C: Sarfraz and Raza Hasan skittle Hyderabad Hawks to give Sialkot easy win

Unorthodox left-arm pacer Sarfraz Ahmed ran through Hawks’ top order which gave southpaw spinner Raza Hasan perfect opportunity to cash in. They shared seven wickets between then as Hawks crept to 96 for 8 in the allotted overs.

Wicket-keeper Shahzad Haider was the top scorer with 42 runs. Sialkot chased down the target in the 17th over with the loss of just one wicket, their captain Shoaib Malik for 50 off 52 balls, who promoted himself to open. Sarfraz was named the Man of the Match.

Group A: Khurram and Kaneria help Karachi Zebras rout Quetta Bears

Zebras opted to bat and posted a challenging score of 172 (for the loss of 5 wickets). Man of the Match Khurram Manzoor (62 off 52 balls) gave the innings a perfect start, while impetus was provided by Anwar Ali who scored a quick-fire 32 batting at one down position.

In reply no Quetta batsmen were unable to build partnerships as Karachi spinners and seamers alike strangled them. Abid Ali was looking good but his innings was cut short by Danish Kaneria who ran him out. Kaneria led from the front, taking 3 wickets for 23. They won by 44 runs.

Group A: Abbottabad Falcons lose a winnable match against Lahore Eagles

Last match of the day could have been a thriller had Abbottabad put some thought into the chase. After restricting Lahore Eagles to a manageable 150(for 4), they started poorly. Yasir Hameed, hero of the last match, and Ghulam Mohammad started sluggishly, getting just 14 from first four overs.

They needed more than 90 in the last ten overs, but Lahore found an unlikely hero in Taufeeq Umar, their skipper, who took vital wickets of Yasir and Younis Khan in two balls to rattle the middle order. Yasir was looking set after a slow start, but his innings of 44 off 42 in fact did not help his team this time.

Some late flashes were inadequate as Falcons were all out in the last over, 15 runs shy. Earlier Eagles’ total was built around their openers, Imran Farhat and Taufeeq who score 43 and 35 respectively.

Taufeeq was the worthy winner of the Man of the Match award.
