England vs West Indies – Young West Indies hand England a shock defeat

Unknown spinner Garey Mathurin made England dance on a slow and spin-friendly pitch as young West Indies side pulled off a stunning victory to level the T20 series.

Match Report - 2nd T20I: England v West Indies, Kennington Oval, London, 25 September 2011

Graeme Swann opted to bowl first and the decision proved right when his team needed to chase a modest score of 113. English spinners Scott Borthwick and Samit Patel gave nothing away as did the English seamers.

Swann did not bowl his full quota of overs to give chance to young bowlers in side. The slowness of the wicket and tight England bowling hampered the scoring apart from cutting down the boundaries.
Only Marlon Samuels prospered for a while scoring a run-a-ball 35. There were only 7 fours and 2 sixes in Windies’ score of 133 for 6. Patel took 2 for 22, while Borthwick gave only 15 in his quota taking a solitary scalp.

The chase which should have been a cake walk for the all-conquering England proved to be a nightmare. They slumped to 60 for 7 before they could have realized what was in store. Mathurin’s collected stunning figures of 3 for 9 in his four overs.

No West Indian bowler gave England opportunity to cash in, as putting the ball away was as difficult as hitting out to the boundary. Ben Stokes was the only man who batted for a reasonable length of time, scoring 31 off 23 balls with 3 fours and a six, the only six of the innings.

England folded for 88 in 16.4 overs as West Indies jumped and screamed in joy. Borthwick was rightly named Man of the Match.

West Indies 113/6 (Samuels 35, S Patel 2/22) beat England 88/10 (Stokes 31, Mathurin 3/9) by 25 runs

Series: Drawn 1-1

Notable debut: Garey Mathurin

Man of the Match: Garey Mathurin
