Faysal Bank T20 Cup – Day 1 Round Up: Yasir Hameed’s ton and a Karachi Lahore thriller

First day produced two one-sided matches and a nail-biter between Lahore Eagles and Karachi zebras. Yasir Hameed scored a boundary-filled ton, while Ahmed Shehzad and Kamran Akmal feasted on Hyderabad Hawks weak bowling line-up.

Group A: Abbottabad Falcons thrash Quetta Bears

Quetta’s captain and wicket-keeper Bismillah Khan inserted Abbottabad, skippered by Younis Khan, in after winning the toss. The decision backfired as on a flat track falcons posted a huge total of 190 for the loss on only two wickets.

Yasir Hameed batted fluently on the way to his maiden T20 ton, as he shared an unbeaten 116 run stand for the 3rd wicket with Adnan Raees who scored 51. Yasir’s 101 took just 65 balls and contained 14 fours and one six.

In reply Bears were blown away by Falcon’e bowlers led by Junaid Khan, who took 3 wickets for 24. They could only muster 118 for 8, and lost the match by a huge margin of 72 runs.

Group C: Lahore Lions prevail over Hyderabad Hawks

Riding on powerful start by their openers, Kamran Akmal (62) and Ahmed Shehzad (72), Lahore set a challenging score of 194 for 5 on the board. Both batted forcefully and put on 116 runs in just 12 overs.
Only leg-spinner Nasir Awais trouble Lahorites to some extent as he took 3 wickets for 43 runs.

Hawks responded well initially as Azeem Ghumman and Sharjeel Khan raced to 31 in about 4 overs. As both departed one after the other, Hawks slipped away and never recovered. Lions’ bowlers led by Wahab Riaz and Raza Ali Dar, who both took two wickets, blew the middle and lower order away.

Hyderabad were all out for 112 and lost the match, comprehensively, by 82 runs. Kamran was the Man of the Match.

Group A: Karachi Zebras lost last-ball thriller to Lahore Eagles

Taufeeq Umar, after winning the toss for Lahore Eagles, started aggressively in company with Imran Farhat, putting on 43 in just 4.4 overs. After Umar left for 34, the middle order could not keep the pace as Lions were restricted to 143 for 6. Only Ali Azmat scored 36. Danish Kaneria took 2 for 26.

In reply, Zebras lost both openers cheaply but Faisal Iqbal (47 off 37) and Hasan Raza (49 off 54) carried them towards what seemed to be a regulation win. They put on 95 for the 4th wicket, but failed to increase the tempo and got out at the wrong time.

Lions succeeded to create panic as Zebras lost their way, ending just two runs short of the total. Saad Naseem took 2 for 22. Hasan Raza, surprisingly, was awarded Man of the Match.
